Death Toll in China Quake Rises to Nearly 12,000
A Chinese disaster relief official says the death toll has risen to nearly 12,000 following a massive earthquake that struck the country. Disaster Response Director Wang Zhengyao said at a news conference Tuesday that 11,921 people had died so far from the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that was centered in Sichuan province. The death toll from Monday's quake is expected to rise even higher, with state media saying thousands are still trapped in collapsed buildings. More »
First U.S. Relief Airlift Arrives in Myanmar
The U.S. launched its first relief airlift to Myanmar on Monday after prolonged negotiations with the country's isolationist junta, which considers Washington its enemy and has restricted international aid to as many as 2 million cyclone victims. The unarmed military C-130 cargo plane, packed with supplies, flew out of the Thai air force base of Utapao for Yangon. Two more air shipments are scheduled to land Tuesday. More »
Over 20 Dead in Mo., Okla., Ga. After New Round of Storms
Crews and search dogs hunted Sunday for survivors or bodies in piles of debris after tornadoes and storms rumbled across the region a day earlier and killed at least 21 people in three states. Six people died in Picher, once a bustling mining center of 20,000 that dwindled to about 800 people as families fled lead pollution there, and officials held out hope that they wouldn't find any more bodies. Myanmar Says No Need for Foreign Aid Distribution
Myanmar will accept foreign aid but not foreign aid workers, the foreign ministry said on Friday, after a disaster rescue team from Qatar that arrived in Yangon on an aid flight was turned back. "Myanmar is not in a position to receive rescue and information teams from foreign countries at the moment," said a foreign ministry statement carried in the official Myanma Ahlin newspaper. "But at present Myanmar is giving priority to receiving relief aid and distributing them to the storm-hit regions with its own resources," the statement said... More »
Clinton Fights On Amid Doubts She Can Win
Sen. Hillary Clinton has loaned her campaign an additional $6.5 million of her own money, superdelegates are switching to her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, and fundraisers and, even, many aides think she cannot win. But despite it all, Clinton, D-N.Y., still vowed today to keep fighting. Following her primary loss in North Carolina... Obama Big Winner in N.C., Clinton Ekes Out Ind. Win
In what may be a turning point for the presidential aspirations of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., the former first lady vying to be the nation's first woman president lost the North Carolina primary to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and squeaked out a razor-thin victory in Indiana, failing to decisively capture the Hoosier State. Clinton won Indiana by just over 22,000 votes, a primary performance... More »
Indiana, N.C. Voters to Settle Largest Remaining Contests
Like marathoners on their second wind, Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton raced for advantage until the final hours in the campaign for the Indiana and North Carolina primaries Tuesday. Voters in both states are settling the largest remaining contests in a Democratic presidential nomination struggle that has dragged improbably into spring. There was little if any expectation that the primaries would settle the big, messy picture. Both Clinton and Obama predicted they'd still be campaigning in June... More »
Obama Says Clinton Sounds a Lot Like President Bush
As rhetoric over foreign policy, electability and a gas tax holiday intensifies less than 48 hours before another defining moment in the epic 2008 election, the Democratic presidential contenders stepped off the trial Sunday in Indiana for separate Sunday show interviews on dueling television networks. On ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y... More »
Clinton Says Calls to Drop Out Are 'Just Idle Talk'
Hillary Clinton campaigned Wednesday in Indianapolis, on the same day that Indiana superdelegate and former Clinton supporter Joe Andrew announced he was switching his allegiance to Barack Obama. Andrew, the former head of the Democratic National Committee, nominated by Bill Clinton, cited his belief that continuing to support Clinton was bad for the Democratic Party. "I think this has been good for the Democratic Party," Clinton countered... More »
