My Tucson: What conservatives can learn from 'Gladiator'

It must be a conservative thing as I often find myself relating the days news and events to movies. More than likely it's nothing more than a biproduct of watching entirely too many movies in the first 36 years of my life. Needless to say I wanted to share this op-ed from the Tucson Citizen today as it's not only one of the few conservative op-eds that actually makes into the paper, but it's also a really good read. One thing that came to mind after I read it however is how really, as a conservative, it won't be nearly as painful if Barack Obama wins as it would be for a liberal if John McCain wins. McCain has a tough final 4 weeks in this race and at this point it is Obamas to lose. While anything is possible I feel it only appropriate that while we pray for the best, we must also prepare for the worst. Truth is that as conservative I try to examine things from the perspective of "How is this going to effect me at home?" Yes there is a huge chance we'll be paying more in taxes and there are certainly a ton of issues that I will not support that Barack will try and push. But in the end I am not looking at either Barack or McCain to help better my life. Only I can better my life. Sure, a Obama Presidency won't go out of its way to make my life any easier, but it also can't get too much in my way either. Liberals on the other hand who support Obama are by in large looking for a president to make their lives better. Sadly this is a dream that just won't ever come true. Oh sure they will feel better and attempt to justify how great the world is now that Obama would be president. But truth be told a majority of those who think a president will make their lives better will be just as miserable a few years from now as they are today. I on the other have choices that I can make everyday for myself and family. No president can do a better job at making my choices for me better than I can. I hope my Dad was right and that America is smart enough to not elect Obama. But if he is wrong, it's only going to be 4 years until we can get a better guy or girl.

Grant Rd. widening alignment unveiled

While we have 4 years until we have to start enduring what will become endless griping about "when are they ever going to finish Grant Road?", I feel it is appropriate to go ahead and ask the question of "Is this forward progress?" Looking at the price tag of well over 100 million dollars I can certainly see that money going to much better use in the short term. However I am not so naive to think that widening Grant Rd won't be a huge benefit to the city. I do have to laugh at the fact that we will have to close Tucson staples like Bookmans, and (not to be missed by many) Walgreens, we will be keeping the antique malls? Was this because it was simply not needed to demolish the, or is this some lame veiled attempt to hang onto the past by keeping open some stores that few ever shop in, but many feel better about themselves knowing that we kept them there? I probably would not be questioning such a project at all if it were not for the fact that I have zero confidence in most of our elected leadership to be making decisions based off what is best for Tucson and not whats best for their political futures. Again we have sometime before we have to start really dealing with this and if Rio Nuevo is any example I will probably be in a retirement home before I ever hear Allan Kath say "It's ribbon cutting day for the newly widened Grant Road".

McCain calls Obama a liar

The campaign has gotten ugly in its final weeks. Truth is this election has been ugly for a long long time and mostly from the left. Now that McCain/Palin have all but started to wage war against Obama and his character the media decides to call it all negative.  I am proud that McCain has decided to go after Obama the man. Obama is not deserving to hold the office of President. He has not proven to me that he is a leader, only a good talking typical politician. Just like so many in our local governments, Obama has aligned himself with anyone who would help him get to where he is today. I say McCain should wage all out war on his character. Ayers, Rezko, Wright are all fair game and their association with Obama should be paraded for all to see, even if it is for a second time. They hammered Sarah Palin from the get-go, went after her family, her state and her hunting skills. I say McCain/Palin hammer Obama all the way to the finish and if they have they lose they at least went down with a fight.

More trees could cool Tucson's parking lots

The mere fact that we have any elected officials that would waste tax dollars to research this alone is dumbfounding. When looking at so many new ideas it's crucial we ask the question "Does this represent forward progress for Tucson?" Sure the idea of having more shady spots to park in sounds good on the surface. But as you peel back the layers you will find the real agenda, one that has nothing to do with comfort for Tucsonans and everything to do with pushing Global Warming ideals as a means to regulate growth and propel left leaning politicians further in their career. The new ordinance would require non-residential construction to provide nearly double the amount of trees in parking lots. There is no thought to the added water to keep the trees healthy, the added cost to purchase the tress, and the extras needed to push such an idea. The result is nothing but more government bureaucracy red tape stunting growth of businesses who may wish to limit the parking spaces in order to offset the cost. There is the real agenda. In the article they cite the "Urban-Heat-Island-Effect" which is a fancy way of saying that it is hotter on concrete or asphalt than on other terrain. The theory is that this contributes to global warming as it makes Tucson hotter. Although by the articles own admission they have no clue just how many parking lots Tucson has, so how could they possibly know just how much "hotter" Tucson is because of "Urban-Heat-Island-Effect". This is another feel good, accomplish nothing but pushing liberal agendas issue that will ultimately die with no public support. In the meantime time will be wasted when it could have been spent addressing real issue like drug use, rising crime and lack of law enforcement. How many of these banal proposals will our government waste time and tax dollars researching before the local citizen wakes up and changes out this phony leadership for actual leaders. Real local leaders who will stand by the needs of the people and not hack politicians appealing to their base with meaningless proposals.

Palin says Obama 'palling around' with terrorists...
Palin says Obama comments disqualify him for commander in chief.

Are the McCain/Palin campaign taking the gloves off?  Many of us can only hope so. For a while there, the McCain camp seemed to have reverted back to its meager beginnings. McCain wasn't talking tough and Sarah Palin seemed like she had gone into hiding apart from a few few poorly done interviews. Now it would seem that in the remaining weeks McCain has decided to use Palin as many us wished he had been from the get-go - as a pitbull in lipstick and heels. Bringing out Ayers, Wright, Rezko, etc., using what so many of the talk radio crowd had been saying for over a year about the people Obama associated with, it would appear they want to hit Obama where it hurts. With McCain getting ready for 2 more crucial debates, he can focus on the issues, while Sarah Palin can campaign asking the American people, "is this man really what America needs?" You can judge a mans character by the people he associates himself with. Character matters and with 4 weeks left this election is far from over.

Pakistan officials: Suspected U.S. strikes kill 19

Will there be an October surprise, who knows? The most logical one seems to  be Pres Bush killing or capturing Osama Bin Laden, although I do wonder just how big of a boost it would actually be to John McCain.

Councilman suggests new tax on booze

What have we been saying all along? That it's just a matter of time before the idea of tax hikes comes along to fill the budget shortfalls created by the incompetence of our City Council. "If the equivalent was 25 cents a six-pack, who would care?" Leal said, I am pretty sure that the person buying the six pack would care. They are going to spend tons of money doing all this research only to have the public shoot it down anyway. We were told that the council was "looking" at cutting some of it's non-essential services, which would have been a step in the right direction, but so far I have seen no follow up. The City of Tucson and it's taxpayers should not have to shoulder the burden of our City Council and it's poor management skills. If the council would make Tucson more viable for business, allow projects to actually move forward rather them putting them off, do something about the rising crime and drug rate by funding and staffing our TPD then maybe we could find more money that way. If more people moved in instead of out and business came to Tucson providing the jobs and tax revenue than there would be no need to raise taxes on anything. But alas our local Government wouldn't know leadership if it laid down astro turf in a parking space and called it a park.

Biden, Palin spar on Iraq, economic crisis

Critics call Prop. 200 a trap, not payday loan reform

I found this whole idea of banning the payday loan stores in the middle of this Bailout mess interesting. I found myself wondering if my opinion would be any different looking thru the lens of the financial mess that got us to the point where our government is going to spends billions on bad loans. Truth be told my opinion didn't change and I actually feel even more strongly now that Prop 200 should be pushed thru to secure that payday loan stores can conduct business in Arizona. Payday loans actually do it better than most lenders because they ensure that they will get their money back in return. People will always have the opportunity to choose whether they take a loan or not and always have the choice of whether or not they walk thru the doors of the store. Payday loans provide a service that people want, jobs that people need, and tax revenue for the state. Those that abuse the payday loan stores are not going to suddenly be better off financially or make better choices because they don't have the option of a payday loan store. In the end maybe with Prop 200 putting in extra provisions to help the consumer people will take out smaller manageable loans than larger ones they shouldn't and can't afford.

Palin, Biden debate gives her chance to come back
Have the past few weeks all been a ruse? Was the Katie Couric interview simply a means to an end, bringing expectations so low that she has no place to go but up? Are those that know her correct in their assessment that she is a skilled debater and will shine in cunning fashion against a seasoned Biden? Who holds the advantage, the man who knows that the moderator of the debate is in the tank for Obama, or the Hockey Mom who really has nothing to lose but about 2 months of being away from Alaska if the McCain Camp fails to win this election? All of these questions will be answered by 7:30 tomorrow night. At the very least and partisan politics aside, this has to be one of the most fascinating elections in modern history. I know that I look forward to when my children grow up and read about the 2008 election that I will be able to tell them the reality of what has taken place in the past year. I only hope that I can say "And that is the real story of how John McCain and Sarah Palin got elected" and not "And thats how the country got screwed up for a few years under President Barack Obama"

McCain turns irritable, sarcastic in interview

The hypocrisy is so blatant and irresponsible that I wonder if we will even get back to having a TV or print media that will simply be objective and report the news. From a moderator who has a pro-Obama book coming out running the Biden-Palin debate, to this article today I am stunned at the depths to which journalistic integrity has sunk. Wasn't there once a sense of pride and a badge of media reporting honor to put your own political opinions aside to do hard hitting news? Now it seems to be nothing more than an effort to see how bad they can make someone or something look to further some agenda or candidate. In the case of this story about McCain, I watched the video and McCain was irritable and sarcastic, because the reporter was being trite and petty in her questioning. The media and the left has been so unjustly hammering the McCain/Palin campaign so hard that they have every right to be irritated. I can understand why the media might be frustrated however, seeing that they have been so in the tank for Obama and he still can't seem to pull away in the polls.

Analysis: With bailout, McCain reaches dead end

John McCain pulled his "Campaign Suspension/Save the Day" move a week too soon. There was no way of knowing what was going to happen and the reality is that this went down because Nancy Pelosi and the Dems who rejected this bill wanted it to fail, even if it meant that the market would crash, all to make John McCain and the Republicans look bad. The Dems have majoirty control and could have passed this bill if they wanted, but they didn't. Now John McCain has to hope the the economy gets off the front page as soon as possible and that Sarah Palin plays the part of a female rockstar politician and becomes a shining northern light during Thursdays nights debate. I fear that McCain needs to start doing more of what will win him this election and less of what he wants to do. I still prefer he loses doing the right thing, then wins doing the wrong thing, but who is to say he can't do both.

Bay Area Seniors: 1930s Depression Much Worse

We are supposed to learn from our elders right? So can we please stop calling this Bailout mess a depression. I don't personally know a single person who has lost a job over this mess. That's not to say people haven't, but that is to say this while this is indeed a colossal mess for Wall Street, Washington, and the election, we are not in a depression, unless you call the fact that this whole deal has me depressed.  If Washington had not taken such an alarmist approach to this than Monday's market crash probably could have been avoided. The media has been no help either. Stating over and over that the market is recovering because the are optimistic that a bailout will still happen is a fabrication, a story they like to hype to keep the line of thinking of going that the public must keep watching the news or they will miss seeing this Great Depression happen right before our very eyes.

Bleeding Red: Dow Dives 778 on Rescue Vote

When did the love die? Apparently the public spoke up and neither Dems nor the GOP could get behind this thing. And why should they?  They have been telling us for over 2 weeks now about a complete economic collapse right around the corner..."The Great Depression could be Monday" and all that.  The bottom line is that most of the Congressional Dems and Republicans combined could not get on board this thing and these are the same guys that drafted this bill. The free market has the next few days if not at least a week to see how it will react with no bailout. I think that the failure on this bailout bill was the best thing that could happen at the moment. At the very least lets see what the economy does knowing that nothing at all will be happening for the next few days.

Reps. Giffords, Grijalva explain vote against bailout

Grijalva and Giffords better watch out, or they may drown in their own collective BS. While I don't presume to know what either of their true motivations were,  it is my humble opinion that their choice to bail on the bailout had little to do with helping Main Street and everything to to do with the fact that even Main Street didn't approve. I will give credit where credit is due and I am thrilled that this massive step towards a socialist Wall Street takeover failed and I am glad that our elected officials, regardless of party affiliation, voted 'no' on this. But I also don't feel these guys should be spinning this to make it sound like it was in the best interest for the people and it didn't go far enough. By saying they voted it down because it didn't help the tax payers just goes to show that they still supported the bailout on principle. Don't be fooled on this one, they did the right thing but that is only because the public spoke up and told them they better not vote for it. Trust me if there had been no voter outrage these two would have voted for the bailout without hesitation.

McCain-Obama debate pulls average early rating

My mentality going into the debates would be that the effect of either candidate doing well would surely make a difference. Now I am getting the sinking feeling that, in the absence of a good sound bite, the voters pretty much know where they stand on the these candidates. Something major for the media to pick up on that would either showcase one candidate or hurt another is about the only real game changer I see left (apart from an October surprise). I do think that the Biden/Palin debate will be one that will either provide the Palin haters with even more blog fodder or she'll knock it out of the park and silence her critics once and for all. I get the feeling that unless the McCain camp decides to throw caution to the wind and let Palin just be Palin than we should probably expect her performance to be rather safe. I do believe that McCain outperformed Obama in the Friday night debate, but without a stand out moment it did nothing to advance his campaign and did nothing to hurt Obama, so therefore, the win goes to Obama.

Burglary Alert For Tucson Foothills

When is our elected leadership ever going to step up to start addressing this issue of crime in our city? We have been having quite a bit of fun as of late with the stories of stolen political campaign signs, but I am seriously beginning to feel like everyday people think it's ok to steal and vandalize for the sake of a difference in politics, and it relates to the mentality that someone who would commit a major crime might be thinking. In the face of a lack of leadership and shortage of law enforcement what incentive is there for someone who would commit a crime to think twice about doing so? We need a complete change of leadership this November.

Sole race could swing supervisor majority

You want to see real change it starts with the electing of not only Tim Bee, Harry Shaw for Pima Sheriff, and Brad Roach for County Attorney, but we also have a chance to change the Democratic majority inside Pima County with the removal of Sharon Bronson and the electing of Barney Brenner.

Below is a few of many emails I have recieved from Tucsonans who have had similar things happen to their GOP yard signs. Plus listeners who also have decided to do something about it.

Hi Jon,
First I just wanted to say I enjoy listening to your show!
I wanted to share with you my story of my McCain/Palin yard sign incident.  I put my sign up the day before I heard of yours being stolen.  Today is Friday, the sign lasted three days.  The sad thing is my daughter, who is 13 years old was coming home from school when the neighbor came up to her and handed her the sign that had been clearly run over by a car.  He said that he witnessed someone come into my front yard, tear the sign out of the ground, throw it into the street and run over it again and again.  Jon, I live in the foothills where the homes average value is $400,000 and above.  It amazes me what these radical Obama followers will do!

Go McCain!

Sincerely,

Subject: Yard Sign

I regularly listen to your show.
Anyway, I heard a caller advise Thursday morning to spray the sign with cooking oil to make it slippery for a thief. I received my sign in the mail on Thursday and set it up - along with the cooking spray. I live in a new neighborhood and wouldn't you know it, my sign didn't last the night. Nowhere to be found, but I laughed all day Friday knowing that they got oil all over themselves, and maybe their car, in the process. Luckily I have another sign. I will be going to the home improvement store for roofing mastick to coat the metal and edges of the sign this time (basically make a border). Maybe some honey or syrup on the sign itself.
Like you said, the left somehow feels justified in steeling a sign to save others from having to see it.
I don't expect it to last very long, but what can you do? I still have my bumper stickers.

Thanks for your show,
Listener/Fan

Subject: My McCain/Palin Truck

Hi John,

Two of my boyfriend's neighbors popped up with Obama signs.  We looked
at the signs and decided we had to do something.  Of course, I believe
in free speech and it never occurred to us to rip the signs down.
Then we heard your show and felt that the rolling McCain/Palin billboard
was a better idea.  I called up Mark at Testimonies Vinyl Graphics and he agreed to do our truck.  Many thanks to Mark on a great job and great design.  Just
in the one day we have driven the truck, we have gotten numerous honks,
thumbs up, smiles and nods.  The truck has also sparked some political
debate with acquaintances.
Thank you,
___________

Bailout Talks Disintegrate Into Verbal Brawl; Fate Uncertain

I watched this whole mess play out yesterday and todays spin to make Obama look good is a bold faced lie. The claims the dems had a deal was a ploy because they knew that John McCain did the right the thing by suspending his campaign to come to Washington to be involved in the "bailout". Some are claiming that ads were still running and that McCain spokes people were granting interviews while McCains campaign was suspended. First of all it takes a few days for ads to stop running because you pay for them in advance. Secondly, the campaign suspension means that McCain is making no current campaign stops or new ads etc..until the reach an agreement to help the economy. The left wing media thinks that just because he suspended his campaign that he shouldn't or his spokes people shouldn't be on TV at all and that simply is not the case. Getting back to the deal or no deal. There was no deal yesterday other than the original 700Billion Paulson deal. When McCain and Obama had their summit with Pres Bush at the White House the house republicans presented a different deal that helped Wall Street, provided accountability and didn't hand out 700 Billion up front, it was a working "bailout" that would provide help to Wall Street when and if needed. Thats when the Dems and Obama played political games and everything went south. Obama claims that John McCain added politics into the mix? No Obama did, Obama refused to suspend his campaign, Obama held a presser after at the White House Summit and Obama still thinks they should debate while WAMU folded over night and the economy is still in jeopardy. McCain did the right thing from the get go and is being a leader. Obama is acting like a rookie first year senator.

Pollster says election could end in landslide

While we still don't have "bailout", "loan", "Colossal SNAFU" or what ever you want to call this Wall Street mess, so I thought I would give you something a little different to chew on. What if all the polls are wrong? What if this race isn't the neck and neck down to the wire finish that everyone is saying? I have been saying all along that either Barack or McCain should be running away this thing. Given what the media and the left have done to discredit Pres Bush for the past 8 years you would think the public would have a pretty good idea of which way they want to go? For as right of center as John McCain is he is still right and we all know just how left Obama is. I may regret saying this and could be totally wrong but, come election night I expect to see the polls tied up right until the end and a landslide victory taking place all across this great nation. Who will it be and what happens when we wake up Nov 5th, that is still anyones guess?

Cameras may be curbing speeders and accidents

I have been trying to get the red light camera issue for the past week now and hope to finally talk about on Fridays show. These latest figures are being touted as a success by our local PD. While I have nothing but respect for our law enforcement, these figure don't go very far in convincing me that these cameras are anything but a profit machine for the state. According to the data there have been some reductions in various infractions, but there also has been a slight up tick in some accidents as well. In the meantime the whole process by which the citations are issued leaves major holes in the way they can be paid, how they need to be served and how they can actually be avoided by the driver with a little ingenuity. Which leaves open the opportunity for court battles over very minor yet expensive infractions. I still have a tough time seeing the justification in these cameras. Especially since these are supposed to help free up our law enforcement and yet we still see a rising crime rate with a shortage of TPD and no one in a leadership position willing to step and address the issue.

Push is on to legalize 12 million illegal residents, let more in

Sometimes I just wish these groups would just come out and say "We want amnesty plain and simple" rather than trying to spin this little fairy tale. The fairy tale this time is that we actually have enough border security to no longer have to be concerned with more illegals coming in and now is the time to give amnesty, because as we all no that our job market would collapse without the illegal immigrant. Thats a nice story and all but be not fooled as it's a bold faced lie. The border is not secure and we hear about it all the time in the very paper that printed this story. They don't want the border secured, they just want all the illegals to not be held accountable for breaking into our country. They want the illegal population to help them push their agendas, vote for their base and contribute to the mentality that the left pushes that the government will take care of you. Truth is that most immigrants who come to this country work hard, contribute to our country and don't like the illegal situation any more than you or I do. this was evident when as far as I saw, not a single border rights group locally bothered welcoming the brand new 1900 american citizens sworn in on Tuesday. This was never about compassion for the illegals in this country, this is about providing amnesty so that those who champion their cause can take advantage of them and increase their voter base. The american public will never accept an amnesty plan until they at the bare minimum know that the border is secure and right now it's not by a long shot.

McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout
Phone lines open Thursday morning for your reaction to this breaking news at 6am.

There is a crisis right now in our country and that crisis is different for everyone. That crisis is either that President Bush and others are proposing a socialist agenda and want to bail out Wall Street to a tune of 700 billion plus and you think that is a bad idea, or that crisis is that you believe that Washington actually does need to bail out Wall Street or we might face another depression. Frankly I believe the former and think that Wall Street and Washington need to let the free market play out. I also believe that because this is a genuine crisis on either front that John McCain is doing the right thing by calling for a suspension of both campaigns and heading to Washington until this is sorted out. No matter who wins one of them is going to be handed this mess and I feel better knowing that if John McCain wins he was fully a part of whatever that decision is. I truly want to believe that McCain is putting the country first and to be honest it really would appear that way since I don't see how this helps him at all. As far as the debate is concerned, the media knows that moving the debate is no big deal and actually makes it that much more important. The media wasn't even talking about the debate all week and now they will be. I would rather see John McCain lose doing the right thing, than win doing the wrong thing. Plus with his suspending his campaign it give me more time to get the McPalin Moblie finished. (See below).

Someone stole my McCain/Palin Yard Sign!

Because of my theft we launched "McPalin Justice". Someone decided that because of a difference of political opinion and ideology they were justified in stealing my sign (I also have a Harry Shaw for Pima Country Sheriff which they left up). Because of this I am now having my car decorated as a rolling McCain/Palin billboard. Mike at Ruthrauff Auto is kind enough to paint the car while Element 7 studios, inc will be providing graphics.
