- Weekend Show BLOG...

I have never been one who liked political songs much. Maybe that was simply do bands like Rage Against the Machine, whose music I could enjoy if it weren't for it's blatant political slant. Or guys like Bono of U2 who decided to be come quasi political ambassadors just because, well, he's Bono. I also have never been a huge fan of patriotic songs. That was probably more due to just the music it self was not my style. Or the over use of Lee Greenwoods "Proud to be an American". It has it's time and place, but after running the board for the Sean Hannity Show at the last station I worked at when he was promoting his Freedom Concerts I just got fried on the song. I swear he planned that song 3 times a day. There are however, every once and awhile bands that get it right. They speak from the heart, they make it honest and it works. Below are 2 videos for songs that hit the nail on the head for me. The first one is from a band that I desperately wished had not broken up "Cold". It is a song from their final CD "A Different Kind of Pain". I really got into this song "When Angles Fly Away" before I even realized the meaning behind the lyrics. (BTW that CD is in my top 5 all time favorite rock CD's. If you like the song go out now and find the CD before they stop producing it). The second song and video is "Citizen Soldier" from 3 Doors Down. 3 Doors Down was asked to write a song for the National Guard. It was commissioned after Dale Earnhardt Jr. was tapped to be Co-Sponsored by the Guard (3DD is one of Jr's favorite bands). What I like about this song is that it is essentially a jingle/theme song that actually worked. Which doesn't happen very often. We have many political changes coming in the next year. But the war in Iraq and Afghanistan continues everyday no matter the news of the day. So will bravery of our men and women in uniform.
