SEN-AZ US Senate: The Listening Tour Continues
by Rodney Glassman for United States Senate

Last week was another whirl of activity as we continue to explore the possibility of a run for the Arizona Senate seat in 2010. The crowds are larger and there is energy and the desire for change, even with the election still nine months away.
If you look at Tuesdays blog you see that Rodney "How does this effect my political future" Glassman had decided that he would postpone making a decision to run for Senate until after April. For more details on why that is nothing but a smoke screen see said blog below. Further proof that he had absolutely no intention to stop campaigning can be found in the above link. Rodney isn't stopping anything. That press release was nothing more than a publicity stunt to stall those who are questioning why he is taking so long to decide to run. He is still running around Arizona campaigning and skirting at least the spirit, if not the letter of the "Resign to Run Law." This is everything that is wrong with politics today - it's full of nothing but self-serving and disingenuous hacks trying to fake leadership. Thankfully even those who read the Daily Kos aren't buying it. Check out a few of the comments posted from the above link:

Run or don't run - all of this "exploring" doesn't engender a sense of confidence

One more thing.....
So far you have posted 4 diaries asking for money, but have never answered a single question or even made a single comment.
The thing about 'listening' is that it isn't a one way street - you might want to try listening while you are exploring.

What you need to know to get across a Tucson street
We talked at length this morning about traffic related pet peeves here in Tucson. Having lived everywhere from Los Angeles to Atlanta to Grand Rapids, Michigan and back I can say with much certainty that Tucson has the strangest streets, speeds, and rules of the road I have ever seen. One question that I never had the opportunity to ask was - how did it get this way? Without any expertise on the matter and using the simple act of observation I would tend to believe it's for a few reasons. First, Tucson is so spread out and developed in such a way that it's clearly split into sections. Given how outspoken the NIMBY/environmental community is, I am sure that the planning on streets in certain areas, from the names to the speeds, were heavily influenced by people without great expertise in road planning. Overall the way Tucson has created its road infrastructure really mirrors the politics of the city. When you get outside city limits things tend to be more uniform. Yet the rather chaotic nature of our Tucson core roadways sets the example of how mismanaged Tucson has been. It makes perfect sense that now we would be building a Streetcar to Nowhere in a city that has a Freeway to Nowhere running through the center of it. There is no easy way to get from the Northwest side to the Eastside, but we do have a giant orange Griffin that we paid 30K for and an over priced Trolley underpass that the Trolley can't go through.
I traveled once to a place called the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose California. It was built by the widow of the man who created the Winchester rifle. She went crazy after he died and kept building onto the house with doorways that open to nothing and stairways that lead to nowhere. Maybe we should get Tucsons Board of Tourism to start promoting Tucson as more of an oddity destination. Come see the money we have wasted and our wacky way of building things and doing government! Who knows you may even hear a noisy jet!

Survey: Most Americans believe government broken

So is the government really broken or do people just not like the way it's working currently? It's semantics, which I understand, but to suggest that it is broken would be to suggest that it could be fixed, or that it fundamentally needs fixing. In my opinion, the government is actually working in the sense that it is functioning how it is set up to function. In order to fix it one would have to identify how they would like it run differently. I think a better way to look at this poll is perhaps from the standpoint that people simply don't like what is happening in Washington. The government is working the way it always has. Maybe the problem is that special interest agendas are getting in the way of actual progress. There is so much hand wringing going on that any good thing that the government might actually be able to accomplish is falling by the wayside.
To be fair, each party makes mistakes. The GOP screwed up when they had control and allowed government to get too big. The Dems are screwing up now because Obama wants to grow the government even more. The system isn't broken, the people just don't know what they want. The Dems got control of Congress because the taxpayers didn't like what they saw with the GOP in charge. Obama got elected because the people grew weary of Bush and Obama promised to be something he isn't. Now everyone thinks the government is broken because the people they elected are selfish elitists who care more about their political and party futures than they do the will of those that elected them. In the end, it's the electorate of America that may be 'broken,' or at least were misguided to trust that those they elected including Obama were looking out for them.

City Councilman Rodney Glassman, eyeing John McCain's U.S. Senate seat

This past Friday night, I had the privilege of attending the Lincoln Day Dinner. In attendance were many prominent GOP politicians and elected officials, including Senators Kyl and McCain. I enjoyed the opportunity to spend several minutes chatting one on one with McCain. While it was a conversation I will not soon forget, there was one thing in particular I took away from it. Regardless how how you feel about McCain in regards to this years election, you cannot deny that this man has been a great servant to our nation. I may not, and do not, agree with everything he's voted for or supported, but he is someone who, in my opinion, many politicians should strive to emulate. Now for those that may read this and cry, "but Jon, he's a RINO," let me add some perspective. Who would you rather have serving in the Senate: a John McCain or a Rodney Glassman? Think about it.
I know that many people were out in force to actually protest McCain on Friday night, saying "no more politics as usual," but I would argue that "politics as usual" is a much better description for someone like Glassman. Does anyone actually take this guy seriously? Does anyone know if he actually believes in anything beyond winning an election? I am at the point now that I think people are handing him $20.00 just because they feel he is slick enough to pull off the upset, not because they actually believe that he will be a good Senator. And it's certainly not because they agree with his stances, because he hasn't stated any yet!
It was a real eye opener on Friday night for me. Honestly I don't think we should be protesting our own candidates. If you want to support JD Hayworth over McCain, I get that. But to actually protest John McCain seems a bit out of touch. What happens if he wins the primary? Are those people going to vote for Rodney over McCain? I believe our efforts would be better served in spreading the word about a guy who wants to hand a Senate seat to Harry Reid and the Democrats, who started his campaign off on a lie back in October, and who continues to hold his elected seat on the city council only because he has refused to say he is actually running for the senate. Someone who likes turtles.
Andrews video of the day: I think it's safe to say that the remake of "We Are The World" as a fundraiser for victims of the earthquake in Haiti has been an epic failure. And apparently I wasn't the only one wondering why none of the original artists were included in the new version....

Don’t fall for the streetcar hoax

Sit on this stat for just a second - the $150 million being spent on the streetcar (for starters, mind you) would pay for 100 police officers for ten years (averaging $150,000 per yr). Now I understand the fact that this money is allocated for transit while we deal with rising crime and a gutted police force, but think about the grand celebration of this $150 million carnival ride on Thursday while the cities workforce has been laid off and faced pay cuts, and you begin to get the real picture of what an absolute waste this is. I know it was voted on in 2006, but when you think about what's happened to the economy since then, 2006 is a lifetime ago. Someone somewhere along the way should have said that we need to stop this - or at least put it on the back burner till the economy improves and our core essentials are paid for. But they didn't. And now this is Washington giving an attempted leg up to Raul and Gabby, and our City Council patting themselves on the back for the ability to accept a hand out. The leadership in this town is still a joke and they don't even care.
We now all must watch this project and hold them accountable. The moment one subsidized tax payer dollar is used to lure a business along the "streetcar named disaster" route we need to call it out for the fraud that it is. And your first opportunity will be when the UA is handed the front door keys to the old Walgreens building downtown for a dollar a year in rent.

Recall effort against Tucson mayor, 2 council members called off

So was this is more a matter of the council "adopting" a more pro business attitude, or was it a lack of interest from those at the heart of the recall? Tea Party aside, I believe this was because of lack of interest or enthusiasm from Humberto Lopez and those who started the recall. From the get-go, the effort seemed to lack momentum. I said from the very start that they could probably get the signatures required, but winning the election and actually recalling Walkup, Uhlich, and Romero was going to be a much bigger challenge. Had this effort been just the Tea Party and no one else I would imagine a better effort would have been organized, it would have been better publicized, and it would have at least gotten the amount of signatures required. However it was very clear that those at the heart of this deal didn't know exactly how to get traction and were falling into the same pitfalls of many endeavors. They didn't want to take it to the people and wanted to take a more "mainstream" approach, by which I mean running full page ads in the AZ Star (which nobody reads) and trying to go on shows like AZ Illustrated. What they should have done is take advantage of the Tea Party infrastructure and what they've shown they could do in the past - organizing rallies, reaching out to radio and earning television coverage. But ultimately Lopez never really seemed like his heart was in it. A few choice words from the council and suddenly now the recall accomplished its goal? I haven't seen anything remotely close to actual changes in how the council acts to warrant saying that they have adopted a "pro-business" stance. I'm pretty confident that there were some backdoor dealings going on and the council made Lopez happy. At the end of the day Lopez apparently wasn't all that interested and we can now say the recall was a failure.

Godless life can be good, local group says on sign

I had some fun with this one on Tuesdays show. But I got to thinking after the show, wondering if I should be offended at all by this? Being a Christian, does it bother me at all that they are putting this billboard up? The answer is, no it doesn't. Now maybe for some it would and I could understand why. If one felt that it was a challenge to their faith or more likely turning people off from God then I could see why it might be troublesome. But for me personally these people can believe or not believe what ever they like.
Truthfully I really don't get what they are trying to accomplish with this billboard. Is it supposed to make them feel better? Is it supposed to justify their lack of belief? Now on the other hand, I do understand more why there are more billboards promoting Christianity. Most Christian fundamentals teach that people are to witness to and to spread God's message. If you don't believe in God perhaps their mission is to convince you otherwise? I have nothing to base that on except that I am trying to find a justification as to why they feel it important to spread their message. I guess I would simply say I think it's a bit silly. If you are a non-believer why would you care if someone was a believer? As far as people thinking that those who don't believe in God aren't "good" people, I have not heard that. Maybe it's an assumption made by most athiests? I would venture a guess that if you did a poll of people, even my listeners, and asked if non-believers were capable of being good people the majority would say yes. Turn that question around and ask if Christians were capable of being bad and the majority of people would probably say yes as well.
Personally I tend to think that the people who go around trying to promote their non-beliefs are the ones who deep down actually do believe that a "God" does exist. Their denial and desire for acceptance seem to be a way to validate their non-beliefs. Perhaps those true non-believers are the ones that don't bother and you never hear from them...

Jon Justice goes after Granny

So the headline of the blog itself is just a tad misleading. However the "God Blogger" did get most of what I said correctly. Yes, I feel that parents, guardians and grandparents (grannies included) should be held "reasonably" responsible for the actions of the minors who are in their care. What "God Blogger" failed to mention was what I stated several times in that "30 minutes" of going "on and on" - Steve Kozachik, as he stated, simply wants more accountabilty. A second offense without a reasonable attempt to stop the kids behavior would warrent charges against the parent or guardian. Kozachik said that he is attempting to keep it from getting that far by providing parents with information on programs and other avenues to help steer their kids in the right direction.
To answer "God Bloggers" question - I do have two children as well and they are 3 and 7 years old. If my kids start tagging I can almost guarantee that as soon as I find out, it won't happen again. And if it did I would certainly be taking steps to stop the behavior above and beyond Steve K's suggestions. Is it so out of the question to expect those who are in charge of minors to take some responsiblity in their continued and repeated bad behavoir? Or, at the very least, expect them to make a reasonable attempt to stop the problem? Apparently according to "God Blogger" it's entirely too difficult to have, yes even Granny, hold their minors responsible. If my kids become too tough for me to manage in years to come I will be sure to let "God-Blogger" know I was wrong.

2nd trolley barred from underpass

First of all, does anyone really care about this apart from me and the ones who volunteer? I only care because it seems there are people in town that place so much importance on something that is really just silly. I get that 4th Ave is obviously a big thing for Tucson and the university. The trolley is also "fun" I suppose, but if it were to go away I doubt anyone would miss it. Yet it seems like our leaders want to hang our cities collective hat on it and the idea of a modern streetcar. The trolley really does represent our backwards priorities in Tucson. We embrace the superficial and undervalue the essentials. Which is why it leads the Never Ending Parade of Stupid.
Speaking of stupid read on below:
Palestinian protesters pose as Na'vi from "Avatar"

Here is a great example of what we mean whenever you hear the "EPIC FAIL" sound drop on the show. I understand their plight, but seriously this is just downright silly. I will give this stunt one thing, it did get some exposure. Sadly I think it will only help bring in more money and not support to their cause.
Andrews random video of the day: It's been a nearly non-stop barrage of 'Rock Band 2' in my house since Christmas - and this song is one of the most popular ones to play, so it's been pretty much stuck in my head for the last 3 weeks... it's a silly number, but this is a pretty solid live version - enjoy!

After the lengthly talks the past few days over Frank Antenori and his Welform Reform bill I figured I would post a handful of the many emails I received.

_______________________
Jon,
I have a rather simple solution to the welfare situation. Make it mandatory for anyone receiving welfare to work at public service type jobs. All the jobs no one wants to do or that the state can’t afford to pay for anymore. If you work for welfare you can only make minimum wage, never more than that. If you don’t work, you don’t get paid (like in the real world). Got kids?? No problem, have some of the “welfare workers” staff child care facilities and do not allow those with children to staff the child care facilities (maybe having to deal with kids all day will encourage welfare recipients to think before having them). The key is, no work, no pay and if you want to make more than minimum wage, then you have to get off welfare. I’ll guarantee you that true welfare cheaters will find another state to live in. You like?
Best Regards,
D. Cathy
_________
Jon,
I appreciate what you're doing with the show. Thanks.
- On the issue of applying more restrictions to welfare recipients:
I have two family members who, unfortunately, rely on both myself and welfare to get along. I agree with being more tolerant to those who get jobs and work, and less tolerant to those who load up on goodies and cry wolf about being unable to find work. I also agree with youself, Antenori and Gowen on wanting to make the recipients less "comfortable" about receiving welfare and wanting to live off of the system. However, the Antenori / Gowen proposal scares me and here's why:
The proposed legislation can (and will) be mis-interpreted in the future by liberals so that if a recipient violates the terms, such as by buying tobacco and alcohol while receiving welfare, that instead of merely being terminated from welfare (which I think is the proposed idea) the liberals will make it a criminal offense, and thereby justify huge amounts of governmental tax money to be spent on enforcing it. This would make it more communist than socialist - and that scares me. Additionally, as we all know, the current administration is wrecking the economy such that many more people will be forced to turn towards welfare. That effectively means that the government is going to dictate more and more of how we live our lives, and criminal consequences if we don't. This is Stalinist communism in my opinion, cultural genocide, or whatever you want to call it. How about "VERY BAD".
History has shown that it is futile to legislate morality (e.g. look at Prohibition), so the government should get out of the morality business entirely. Let the non-profit organizations (e.g. churches) and for-profit private industry (e.g. unemployment insurance) and family members do it - NOT the government. The government's prime objective should be (and only be) to protect us, facilitate commerce and protect our freedoms. THATS IT. Healh, education and welfare can and should be done through private industry. That is what made America great in the first place. Lets not lose the principles that are the foundation of our greatness. Our founding fathers were wise to this, God bless them.
Keep up the good work. I love to listen. Thanks.
Scott
_______
Jon,
You seem to forget that some recipients are also taxpayers and who are going to school to get out of this mess. I am not proud to whip out my food card when I go grocery shopping. That is why I go to the store late at night. I do not get steaks, shrimps, ribs or stuff like that. I actually cook our meals at home. I even get flour to make my own bread in the bread maker!
My husband works part time and goes to school online for an associates in criminal justice. I have to put my education on hold for an associates in veterinary technology from Pima Community College because I am due to have my baby next month. I am hoping I can go back to school this fall. My husband is working very hard to support us. He is looking for a second job and he is wanting to volunteer for the Sheriff's Department.
We do not abuse the system. We do not drink, smoke, or do drugs. We do not have a car. We do not have cable. We don't wear designer clothes. We do not have a cell phone. The only thing that is considered as an extra is the internet but that is needed for my husband's schooling. The last thing we need is to have a bright orange card identifying us that we are struggling when other people do not know what our story is. I agree with the person who wants to make it illegal to purchase smokes and booze while on government aid. Actually, I want recipients to take a drug test to prove that they are clean to be on the system. Like everyone else, I get annoyed when I see someone (I used to work for Circle K) use their food card to buy $80 worth of junk food and then climb into their Escalade and drive off into the sunset.
We are trying to get out of welfare through getting our education. It is only temporary, not forever. Thank you for reading!
Air Force veteran (2001-2005)
________
Jon,
I believe that the welfare program should be reformed to model the way that the church I attend has it setup. This last summer I was laid off and had to use our system first hand. They way it is setup is that we have what are called Bishop store houses, these store houses have foods much like if you were to visit a grocery store. A person comes to your home every 2 weeks and asseses what the needs are of your family, (food wise) and they fill out a form checking the food items they think you need. This is then taken and approved by our Bishop, once done you take it down to the store house and your order is filled. This is not done without strings, you must visit the church career center, actively search for a job, and make sure you get yourself back on your feet asap. The church does and will help with bills, but as a very last resort, you are NEVER given cash assistance, or given any chances to abuse the system. This may seem a little controling, but people have given us no choice in the matter. Email me back, I can give you much more info on how this is setup.
Thanks,
Stephen P.S. Love your morning show
_______
Hi,
Frank Antenori might want to return to Jonathon Swift's "A Modest Proposal" (1729).
People on welfare should sell their plump little 1-year-olds to the rich. The welfare leaches get compensated for their biological resources/efforts and the wealthy get a delicious new food source. We cut down on future welfare cheats because they are gobbled up before they can learn the lazy, no-account ways of their parents.
And, since we have advanced medically so much since the original writing, we could use those poor teenagers for organ harvesting and stick their healthy hearts, kidneys, eyes, livers, etc. into the rich old farts whose own biological systems are failing.
Brilliant, I tell you! Pass it along to Frank, please.
Love & peace-
Mary DeCamp

Bio/History of Jon Justice:

Born and raised in Southern California I attended private Christian Schools from 5th grade through High School. I worked at age 18 as a record store manager. Right around when I turned 21 I left retail to go work as a public real estate auctioneer and property inspector in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. One day, just after being chased off the lawn of a house going into foreclosure by a very large toothed dog who obviously had not been fed for awhile, I heard a commercial for the Academy of Radio Broadcasting. The rest is, as they say....history.
After graduating from the ARB I started as an intern and weekend air talent for Riverside San Bernardino station KCXX in late '95. I then left in '98 joining John Michael at Tucson AZ Alternative Rock KFMA. While at KFMA the Jon and John Show went #1 with our core audience. With this new found fame I was able to convince a promotions intern that I was the coolest guy on the planet and made her my wife. Yes I married an intern and even after she figured out I wasn't that cool Melinda still stayed with me.
In 2000 I returned to KCXX to team up with my still good friend Dick for the Dick and Justice Show. After reaching new highs and lows with bits like "Homeless Survivor" and "Dog in a Hot Car", Dick And Justice went #1 and posted the highest morning show ratings on KCXX. During this time my wife gave birth to our first son Logan Wedge.
In 2003 Dick and I accepted a job as afternoon show for Atlanta's WKLS 96Rock. While achieving some moderate success and hosting a night show on the now defunct FM Talk Real Radio 105.3 we fell victim to a station-wide decline in performance due an on air incident that got the successful morning show fired for airing inappropriate content. Dick and I exited WKLS late in 2004, after which Dick left the radio industry to join CNN.
In December 2005 I joined Grand Rapids MI Active Rock WKLQ as host of the Justice and Jim show. Once again reaching the masses with new lows like the now famous "Dog Drowning Hoax" in which I tried to bring to light the dangers of children drowning in local pools and lakes. Needless to say management mistakenly silenced me after the bit reached critical mass being covered not only on all local news outlets but major cable networks as well. A bit which was done to help educate and a make statement about how people need to pay more attention to child dangers, ended up making me look like an animal hating shock jock. (Of which I am niether, despite what some now think of me locally). After surviving the "Dog Hoax" in late 2005 (I was not fired for that bit, again despite what has been said in online circles) I found myself hosting the show solo as "Justice in the Morning". . That was until my agent made a deal with the company I worked for to put a syndicated show on several of its stations-including mine.....yes, my agent at the time essentially put me out of work. While I hated to lose my job, I was glad to leave WKLQ.
After serving a brief non-compete I was asked to join the #1 station in the market Newsradio WOOD as APD and fill in talk show host. I was given the job of fill in hosting on the stations two #1 live local shows The Grand Rapids Morning News and Rick and Scott (Both shows I have the utmost respect for). Also I was honored to be working on air the week of President Gerald R. Ford's passing, providing Grand Rapids the only live local call in show for 6 hours. During this time Melinda and I welcomed the birth of our second son Kyle Elliott on December 12 2006.
Just after the first of 2007 NEWSRADIO WOOD 1300 launched The Show with Justice Saturday afternoons.
It is now with great pleasure that I can be back in Tucson Arizona. On August 13th 2007 I started as host of my show "The Jon Justice Show" on 104.1 The Truth Tucson's News FM.
My passion has always been talk radio and I am pleased to finally be able to make a career in radio doing talk radio.
I was raised in a Reformed Presbyterian Christian household. I am happy to carry these beliefs with me still today and to be able pass them along to my wife and children Logan Wedge and Kyle Elliott.
I believe:
-I am not better than you the listener, just lucky enough to have a microphone and you don't
-Republicans get it right most of the time
-Democrats get it wrong most of the time
-If you are a liberal that's alright, everyone can change
-We need more God and less government
-We need more honesty and less political correctness
-The Ten Commandments and the Constitution are not mere "suggestions"
-There is reason why the "War on Terror" is called a WAR
-Freedom and democracy don't happen without a fight and they don't happen over night
-If you think you know how war will play out, you're very confused.
-If you're upset about soldiers that die during war, how mad are you about the homeless guy downtown that starved to death last night, the roll over crash that killed 3, or the winter storm that leveled a home and killed a family.
Death happens and our soldiers are fighting for your right to live free.
-We will win the war in Iraq and the war on Terror, but not without the FIGHT
-The media reports what they think you want to hear and unfortunately most of us are too stupid to care
-The most important things in my life are God, my wife and children, my family and my Job
-My father is my mentor and best friend next to my wife and sons
-The most enjoyment I get from TV comes in the form of NASCAR racing, Star Wars movies on DVD, and 24 the TV Series
-If I want to laugh then Spinal Tap, Monty Python and Judd Apatow movies will fill the need
-Depeche Mode is the most underrated band ever
-Dale Jr drives better than you...go #88, go JR!
-Pizza is greatest meal on the planet
-If I need a drink an Orange AMP energy drink will do. If I need something with a little more kick, Captain Morgans and Diet Pepsi will do the trick.
